A Guide to the English Championship League
The English championship often called the championship, in short, is the division that is ranked the highest in the English Football League. It ranks second following the premier league in the English Football system. Every year, the teams that finish in the top three in the Championship are promoted to the Premier League and those that come last are relegated to league one.
Formerly referred to as the Football League first division, it changed its name to the Football League Championship in the 2005-2005 season. The team that wins the Championship receives the Football League Championship trophy. The Championship is certainly the most affluent non-top flight division worldwide plus it ranks seventh in Europe in terms of riches. On average about 17,578 fans go to the matches played in the championship, coming second after the German 2 Bundesliga. In the 2017-18 season, the team that won the championship was Newcastle United and the runners up were Brighton. There are three teams that are promoted to the Premier League each year from the English Championship. In the 2016 -17 English Championship standings, Reading and Huddersfield Town will have to play each other in a playoff to decide the team which will be promoted to the Premier League to join Newcastle United and Brighton. The playoffs is a knockout contest played by the teams that rank third to six, and the team that wins is promoted to the top-tier soccer. The third-placed team plays against the team that is ranked sixth while the team ranked fourth plays against the team ranked fifth. The winners from each match play against one another at the Wembley Stadium and the winner is promoted to the Premier League and gets the Championship play-off trophy. Currently, Ipswich Town hold the record for being in the championship for the most years. They’ve been in the English Championship since the 2001-02 season when they were relegated from the Premier League.
The season for the English Championship goes from August to May and 24 teams play in the league. Each team plays twice against the other teams in the league. One match is in the home stadium of the team while the other away in the matching team’s stadium. Each team plays 46 games each season. When a team wins, they are awarded three points; if they draw one point and they get zero points for losing. The rank in the league is dependent on the points obtained. The ranking is dependent on the goals they scored for that season if teams tie in a particular position. If at least two teams complete the season when they are equal in all respects, they are ranked in alphabetical order unless a play-off place, relegation or promotion is at stake.
